Drop your dog off at a kennel, sit in the vet's office, or read a boarding contract, and you'll hit a wall of jargon: DHLP, Bordetella, titer, cage-free, enrichment. Most of it sounds more complicated than it is. We've spent more than 55 years caring for Miami's dogs, and we believe pet parents make better decisions when nobody talks over their head.
So we built the dictionary we wish every dog owner had. Below are 40+ of the most common dog-care, boarding, daycare and health terms, each explained in plain English — with a few notes on how we do things here at Canine Country Club. Bookmark it, share it, and never nod along blankly at the vet again.

Terms starting with A
- Aggressive / Reactive Dog
- A dog that growls, lunges, snaps or bites out of fear, territoriality or over-stimulation. "Reactive" usually means a dog over-reacts to triggers rather than being truly dangerous. Many facilities turn these dogs away. At Canine Country Club: aggressive dogs are welcome. Their private run keeps everyone safe and they still get one-on-one care.
- All-Inclusive Boarding
- A boarding rate that bundles in feeding, exercise, playtime, treats, special diets and medication administration at no extra cost — instead of charging à la carte for each add-on. At Canine Country Club: our boarding is genuinely all-inclusive. We won't nickel-and-dime you for the basics.
Terms starting with B
- Boarding
- Overnight care for your pet at a facility while you're away — meals, exercise, a place to sleep and supervision. The pet equivalent of a hotel stay.
- Bordetella also called: kennel cough vaccine
- A vaccine that protects against Bordetella bronchiseptica, the main cause of kennel cough. Almost every reputable boarding or daycare facility requires it, usually within the last 6–12 months.
- Bloat GDV — gastric dilatation-volvulus
- A life-threatening emergency where a dog's stomach fills with gas and can twist. Deep-chested breeds are most at risk. It's why dogs shouldn't do hard exercise right after a big meal.
Terms starting with C
- Cage-Free
- Boarding where dogs are not housed in stacked wire crates. Instead they get open runs, suites or supervised group space. A big comfort and welfare difference. At Canine Country Club: no cages, ever — every guest gets a private 5×21 ft run.
- Crate
- An enclosed cage or kennel used for travel, house-training or short-term rest. Crate training, done kindly, gives a dog a safe "den." It becomes a welfare problem only when dogs live in one for long stretches.
- Cage-Free vs. Crate
- Shorthand pet parents use when comparing kennels. Ask any facility directly: "Are dogs in crates or in open runs, and for how many hours a day?" The answer tells you a lot.
- Canine
- Simply the scientific adjective for "dog" (from Latin canis). Also the name of those four pointed teeth dogs use to grip.
Terms starting with D
- Daycare
- Supervised daytime care and play — drop off in the morning, pick up in the evening. Great for burning energy and socializing dogs who'd otherwise be home alone. At Canine Country Club: doggie daycare runs Mon–Fri 8am–5pm and Sat 8am–2pm.
- DHLP / DHPP
- A combination "core" vaccine. Distemper, Hepatitis (adenovirus), Leptospirosis (or Parainfluenza), Parvovirus. One shot covers several serious diseases. Your vet keeps it current.
- Distemper
- A serious, contagious viral disease affecting a dog's respiratory, digestive and nervous systems. Routine vaccination (the "D" in DHPP) has made it rare in vaccinated dogs.
- Drop-Off & Pick-Up
- The times you can bring your dog in and collect them. Facilities have set windows so staff can give every arrival and departure proper attention. Always confirm them before a holiday stay.
Terms starting with E
- Enrichment
- Anything that keeps a dog mentally and physically engaged: play, exploration, social time, puzzle feeders, scent games and human attention. Bored dogs get stressed; enriched dogs settle and thrive. A cornerstone of a good boarding stay.
- Euthanasia
- The humane, vet-assisted ending of a pet's life to relieve suffering. A heartbreaking but compassionate option many families eventually face. Mentioned here only so the word never catches you off guard.
Terms starting with F
- Fear-Free Handling
- A care philosophy that minimizes fear, anxiety and stress — calm voices, gentle restraint, treats and patience instead of force. Look for it in vets, groomers and kennels.
- Flea & Tick Prevention
- Monthly chews, topical drops or collars that stop fleas and ticks (and the diseases they carry). Most facilities require pets to be on prevention before group play. In Miami's climate, year-round protection matters.
Terms starting with G
- Going-Home Bath
- A basic bath given before pickup so your dog leaves smelling fresh after a stay. At Canine Country Club: a going-home bath is required after 3 days of boarding — and the first one is free for new clients.
- Grooming
- Coat, nail, ear and skin care — bathing, brushing, trimming and clipping. Frequency depends on breed and coat type. Good grooming is about health, not just looks.
Terms starting with H
- Hand-Feeding
- Feeding a dog by hand or by spoon — used to coax picky eaters, monitor sick or senior dogs, slow down gulpers, or build trust with anxious newcomers. A small act of extra attention.
- Health Certificate USDA / CVI
- A vet-signed document certifying a pet is healthy and vaccinated, required for air travel and crossing some borders. At Canine Country Club: we can help arrange USDA pet health certificates and pet transportation.
- Heartworm
- A serious, mosquito-borne parasite that lives in a dog's heart and lungs. Prevention is a simple monthly chew; treatment is expensive and hard. In mosquito-heavy Miami, year-round prevention is essential.
Terms starting with I
- Intake
- The check-in process when your pet arrives: confirming vaccines, diet, medication, emergency contacts and any special needs. A thorough intake is a sign of a careful facility.
- Intact
- A dog that has not been spayed or neutered. Some group-play settings separate intact dogs, especially during heat cycles, to avoid conflict or unplanned litters.
Terms starting with K
- Kennel
- Both a structure that houses a dog and the general term for a boarding business. "Kennel" doesn't have to mean cramped — modern kennels range from wire cages to spacious private suites.
- Kennel Cough canine infectious tracheobronchitis
- A contagious but usually mild respiratory infection — basically a dog cold, with a honking cough. The Bordetella vaccine greatly lowers the risk, which is why facilities require it.
Terms starting with L
- Leptospirosis "lepto"
- A bacterial disease spread through contaminated water and wildlife urine, contagious to humans too. Often included in the DHLP combo vaccine — important in warm, wet climates like South Florida.
- Leash Reactivity
- When a dog barks or lunges on leash but is fine off-leash. Usually frustration or fear, not true aggression — and very trainable with patience.
Terms starting with M
- Medication Administration
- Staff giving your dog pills, drops or injections on schedule during a stay. Always list every medication, dose and timing at intake. At Canine Country Club: medication administration is included in boarding, at no extra charge.
- Microchip
- A rice-grain-sized chip implanted under the skin with a unique ID number. Scanned at vets and shelters, it reunites lost pets with owners. Remember to keep your contact info current in the registry.
Terms starting with N
- Neutered
- A male dog that has had a surgical procedure (castration) so he can't reproduce. Often reduces roaming and certain behaviors. (See also: Spayed, Intact.)
- Nail Trim
- Clipping or grinding nails to a safe length. Overgrown nails hurt and change a dog's gait. Many facilities offer it as a quick add-on during a stay.
Terms starting with P
- Parvovirus "parvo"
- A highly contagious, often deadly virus, especially in puppies. Prevented by the "P" in DHPP. It's a key reason facilities require proof of vaccination before admission.
- Pet Transportation
- A service that drives or flies pets where they need to go — vet visits, airports, relocations. At Canine Country Club: we offer ground and air pet transportation across Miami-Dade and beyond.
- Private Run / Suite
- An individual indoor/outdoor space where a dog stays alone (or with their own housemates), instead of being grouped or caged. More space, less stress. At Canine Country Club: every guest gets a private 5×21 ft run.
- Puppy Playtime
- Supervised, age-appropriate socializing and play for young dogs — building confidence and good manners during the critical early window. At Canine Country Club: ask us about puppy playtime packages.
Terms starting with Q
- Quarantine
- Keeping a pet separated for a period — after illness, exposure, or international arrival — to prevent spreading disease. Boarding facilities may isolate a dog showing symptoms to protect the others.
Terms starting with R
- Rabies Vaccine
- A legally required vaccine in most U.S. states, including Florida. Proof of a current rabies shot is mandatory before boarding, daycare or grooming — no exceptions.
- Recall
- A trained dog's ability to come back when called. The single most important command for safety — and a sign of a well-socialized, responsive dog.
Terms starting with S
- Socialization
- Positive, controlled exposure to other dogs, people, places and sounds, ideally starting young. Well-socialized dogs are calmer, more confident and easier to board. Daycare is a great ongoing tool for it.
- Spayed
- A female dog that has had a surgical procedure (ovariohysterectomy) so she can't reproduce. Also prevents heat cycles and lowers some health risks. (See also: Neutered, Intact.)
- Separation Anxiety
- Distress some dogs feel when left alone — pacing, barking, destruction. A gradual, calm goodbye and a familiar-smelling blanket can ease a first boarding stay.
- Special Diet
- Any non-standard feeding plan — prescription food, allergies, raw, portioned weight-loss meals. Always send exact instructions and pre-portioned food when boarding. At Canine Country Club: special diets are honored at no extra charge.
Terms starting with T
- Titer Test vaccination titer
- A blood test that measures the antibodies a dog already has against a disease. Some owners use it, with their vet, to confirm immunity instead of re-vaccinating. Ask your facility whether they accept titers in place of certain boosters.
- Temperament Test
- A short, structured first meeting to see how a dog reacts to people, other dogs and new spaces — so staff can place them in the right setting for a safe, happy stay.
Terms starting with V
- Vaccination
- A shot that trains a dog's immune system to fight a specific disease. "Core" vaccines (rabies, DHPP) are for all dogs; "non-core" (Bordetella, lepto, flu) depend on lifestyle and risk. Boarding facilities require proof of the relevant ones.
- Vet on Staff / On Call
- A veterinarian available at, or quickly reachable by, a facility for check-ups and emergencies. A meaningful safety net during a stay. At Canine Country Club: we have a vet on staff.
Terms starting with W
- Weight-Loss Program
- A structured plan of portioned meals and supervised exercise to help an overweight dog slim down safely. Extra weight strains joints, heart and lifespan. At Canine Country Club: we run a dedicated canine weight-loss program — ask us about it.
- Wellness Check
- A routine head-to-tail look-over — eyes, ears, skin, weight, teeth, gait — to catch small issues early. Good kennels quietly do an informal one at every intake.
The 3 vaccines almost every kennel requires
If you're prepping for a first boarding or daycare visit, make sure these are current and bring proof from your vet: Rabies (legally required), DHPP / DHLP (distemper combo), and Bordetella (kennel cough). Not sure if your dog is covered? Call us before you book — we're happy to walk you through it.
